LONDON DESIGN MEDAL 2009 AWARDED TO SIR PAUL SMITH

30-11-2009

The Medal was presented at an award ceremony at auction house Phillips de Pury on 23rd September. Speaking at the ceremony, Ben Evans, director of the LDF said:

"We want to celebrate the success of the London Design Festival and its significance in celebrating and promoting design in London. The Festival has helped establish and consolidate London’s position as the design capital of the World. London is a design hub highly regarded for design talent and skill - this should be acknowledged and celebrated. We hope this design medal will be seen as a world class award."
Sir Paul was chosen by a prestigious judging panel which included Mark Jones, Director, V&A, Ekow Eshun, Artistic Director of the ICA and Sir Michael Bichard, Chairman of the Design Council and six other leaders within the world of design.  Established in 2007, the two previous winners of the London Design Medal were Zaha Hadid and Marc Newson, both of whom set the precedent as to the level of excellence expected from a winning contender.

Paul Smith commented:

“I am really honoured to receive the London Design Medal, especially following such brilliant designers as Marc Newson and Zaha Hadid. Design is a wonderful way to earn a living and it means that every day is full of innovation and excitement. Receiving a medal for something which is such a joy, is brilliant!”
