High Hopes for I Saloni 2009

Despite the huge global crisis that has engulfed us all, the Saloni 2009 appear to be setting a countertrend, with all the available exhibition space accounted for. There are actually 202,350
net square metres of exhibition space, all of which will be taken up by the event, split up as follows: 155,350 by the Salone Internazionale del Mobile and the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, 43,000 by Euroluce and 4,000 by SaloneSatellite.

This means that not only is the exhibition complex completely booked out, but there is a huge
waiting list: 491 companies, with 270 applications from abroad, lining up for space on an overall total of roughly 30,000 square metres, who will unfortunately not be able to take part in this edition of the Saloni.

“It would be impossible not to be thrilled by this initial result” states Carlo Guglielmi, President
of Cosmit. “Now we are hoping to equal the number of operators who came to the 2007 edition,
which coincided with the year in which the biennial Euroluce exhibition was last held. Above all, however, I hope that all those companies who have committed themselves to taking part in this edition of the Saloni, which has entailed great sacrifices on their part,  will discover it to be the best possible marketing tool, offering huge visibility that will help to send out a positive signal in these difficult times”.

“The range of goods on offer“ says Manlio Armellini, Chief Executive of Cosmit, “is always varied, with its infinite choice of furnishings, furnishing accessories, lighting products and young designer prototypes. At first and very rapid glance over the items that the 2,723 companies, 911 of them from abroad, are intending to showcase, it is clear that the credit crunch has not led to a damping down
of creative energies, and certainly not to homologation - if anything, it has sparked off two completely different reactions: on one hand there is greater pragmatism and a more robust relationship between item and cost, and on the other there is a tendency to seek refuge in dreams and in rarity value.”

With 1,496 exhibitors, 317 of whom will be coming from abroad, the Salone Internazionale
del Mobile (48th edition) and the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition (23rd edition)
will be occupying the same exhibition space, showcasing 360° domestic furnishing both in terms
of typologies – from stand-alone pieces to coordinates – and styles – from classical to modern –
not to mention the arbiters of tomorrow’s trends.

The goods on offer at Euroluce, the International Lighting Exhibition (25th edition), which is the exclusive benchmark for the Lighting sector, come from 525 exhibitors, of whom 174 are from abroad, and are as wide-ranging as they are top notch.  In synergy with this event, a stimulating programme of collateral initiatives devised in collaboration with the PLDA and APIL lighting designers’ associations will be held, together with the International University Design Schools’ Conference, Designing Designers, dedicated this year to the theme of light.

Finally, 702 young designers, 420 of whom are foreign, will be showcasing their engaging and stimulating work at SaloneSatellite (12th edition), which has always provided a singular platform
for young creativity.

Along with the assortment of commercial goods, Cosmit will – as always – be sponsoring a cultural project, in partnership with the Municipality of Milan, which for the third year running has offered
us its prestigious headquarters at the Palazzo Reale as a venue for a major exhibition, “Magnificence and Style – Five Hundred Years Great Italian Furniture Side by Side”, which will run from 22nd April to 21st June. Conceived by Cristina Acidini and Luigi Settembrini, it will be devoted to the rediscovery of the origins of Made in Italy with a panoply of modern and antique furnishings, each with their own special pedigree.
Light in all its infinite and spectacular variations will be the protagonists of the installation in the Milan Triennale garden by the British artist Cerith Wyn Evans: I=N=V=O=C=A=T=I=O=N (I call your image to mind), a luminescent cloud made up of long neon tubes that twist and turn on themselves. From April 22.
